The Governor promised Caleb and his mother they wouldn’t be one of chosen once that should die because of Caleb´s work for the Governor’s Select Crew.
The narrator is a first-person narrator. The narration is from Caleb´s point of view, where we only hear Caleb´s story:
“I don’t like what I do but until now it has enabled me to keep my mother and me safe, as I am one of the Governor’s Select Crew.(ll. 4-5)” The first-person narrator is limited to Caleb’s point of view and it is focused on this single character and the readers are, therefore, only aware of his thoughts.
Caleb is tongueless. He got tongueless when he said yes to the offer about being the Governor’sSelect Crew. All the people in the crew is tongueless. It’s important that no one figure out that there is a secret. A secret about people getting fed to the trees.
The people that is losing their loved ones don’t know anything. Caleb describes their thoughts as:“I feel kind of sorry for them as they mourn their loved ones thinking that some mysterious creature from the forest must have taken them. (ll. 30-32)”.
