Indledning
We can all have difficult times in our life. When a person is affected by unhappiness, they are typically in need of interest or are affected by lack of energy.

It is common to people to experience unhappiness if they struggle getting along with their work, friends and family instead of being happy and satisfied.

It is a suffering condition, often full of self-blame, lack self-esteem and lack of zest for life. It can be related to incidents or poverty in a person’s life.

“Grace” from Philip Meyer’s novel “American rust” is living proof of how someone can feel down to the fact that they have experienced a tragic situation.

The physical setting of Grace is characterized by the lower class and poverty. “The city had once been promising but now it was mostly abandoned, ten-story office buildings and hotels, all empty;

brick and stone stained dark by soot.” The city has been abandoned which means their ones was life, but the city has turned into an abandoned and destroyed city.

This quote gives the excerpt a more emotional and gloomy setting, because of how Philip Meyer describes the city. Which supports the mood a lot by describing the city as such.

Philip Meyer also uses argumentation concepts, an example could be ten-story office buildings, he could easily describe it as a office building but he added an descriptive word “abandoned ten-story office buildings” to improve the readers understanding of the city’s condition.

It is also shown in this quote “After taking the freight elevator downstairs, she walked up the narrow street that was permanently in the shadow of the tall empty buildings, finally emerging into the sunlight.”

Its shown that the roads are permanently in the shadows. Philip Meyer uses gloomy words to describe this road and it’s easy to tell that it is also abandoned.

When Grace gets passed the city the sunlight arrives, because outside the city there is nature life, but the city is abandoned.
