Indledning
There’s a big focus on looks in the society we live in. The selfie generation is busy photographing themselves, and a lot of people tend to use filters to look pretty.
On social medias people only show the good angles, at the right time, at the right place, with the right people.
Also, a lot of young people got many followers/fake friends, but only a few true friends they can trust and rely on. Today you can also use makeup to hide parts of yourself that you don’t like, and it is getting normal to get plastic surgery.
A lot of people today live by the words: “pretty hurts”, and they are willing to go far to look “idealistic”. And often people hide parts of their outer and inner self when they are around other people.

Sometimes he could be seen contemplating his shadow. When he spoke to people, he always seemed to be hiding his face.” (p. 5, ll. 16-18). He hates how he looks.
He is unstable and begins wearing masks to hide his face, because he doesn’t like himself anymore. His boss finds it extremely odd, that he wears masks, “it’s frightening. How do we know it’s you?” (p. 7, ll. 3-4)
The boss tells him that if he doesn’t stop wearing masks on work it will have consequences. He almost gets fired because of his weird behavior. At the end of the story, he gets a mask that blend into his own face and becomes his new face.
Everybody like his new face and he gets secure again. But then he begins to see that everybody else wears masks, and he starts to judge them by their looks, like he was judged at the beginning of the story.
So, during the short story, he undergoes a development where he starts out as a nice normal person, then he gets insecure and changes himself, and end up as a judgmental, fake, good-looking person.
The short story is written with a third person narrator, and it’s the main characters point of view.
Maybe Okri have written the story with a third person narrator because, the main character, also in that way is “seen through the eyes of others”.
