He also said that his parents are dead. Nick does not believe in Gatsby - he is convinced that Gatsby is lying.

Gatsby then tries to prove it by telling Nick about the time he fought bravely enough in the war to get medals from all the Allied governments. He also showed him a picture of the medal, which resulted in Nick being convinced.

Gatsby tells Nick that this information is a kind of payment for a favor he will ask for later. Gatsby was almost pulled over by the police because he was speeding. Gatsby then showed the cop a white card and the cop politely and apologetically waves them on.

Gatsby claimed that this happened because the police commissioner owed him a solid. At lunch, Gatsby introduced Nick to Meyer Wolfshiem.

He is described in offensive anti-Semitic terms. His speech patterns, his appearance, and his mannerismswere mocked by Nick. Wolfshiem reminisces about another restaurant, where he witnessed an execution related to gang activity, in which he clearly had participated.
