In the story we are as mentioned introduced to three main places: West Egg, East Egg and The Valley of Ashes. The three places symbolize the different social classes.
West Egg is where Nick and Gatsby live. Nick and Gatsby represent the newly rich. Those who have worked hard to climb the social ladder and struggled for a better position in life.
Both come from humble beginnings and have now gained wealth. The East Egg is where Tom and Daisy live. East Egg represent the upper class, the rich people with wealthy families.
Both Tom and Daisy were born in a wealthy family and has never had to struggle in life. They have always had money, and are well-educated, because they have been under the right circumstances in life.
The Valley of Ashes is where Wilson and Myrtle lives. Here, the working class is represented. The Valley of Ashes is a depressed and dark industrial area, and the people there wants to leave, but are trapped by their circumstances in life.
They want to move up to a higher social class, but they just don’t have the opportunities to do so.
A big theme in this story is love. Gatsby has done everything he has done, because of his love for Daisy. Ever since he met Daisy, and had to leave her, he has thought about her and loved her unconditionally.
