Uddrag
The American writer, F. Scott Fitzgerald, was born into an upper-middle class family in Minnesota in 1896. He was, however, mainly raised in New York.
He attended Princeton University but dropped out in 1917 to join the army and was stationed in Alabama. There he met his wife-to-be, Zelda Sayre.
Initially, the rich socialite rejected Fitzgerald’s courtship because of his lower social status. However, when, a few years later
in 1920, he had significant commercial success with his first novel, This side of paradise, she agreed to marry him. In 1921 their only daughter Frances (“Scottie”) was born.
Living in New York the Fitzgeralds soon became an indispensable part of the New York social elite and nightlife, attending every party of importance
dancing and drinking in the most famous Manhattan clubs and celebrated homes. F. Scott Fitzgerald had been known to be a heavy drinker from a very young age, and the Fitzgeralds’ lifestyle meant that he spiralled downwards into alcoholism.
An addiction he struggled with for the rest of his life, and which in 1940 most likely contributed to his early death of a heart attack at the age of 44.
The Fitzgeralds became legendary and worked on building and developing their images. They basked in their own notoriety and seemed to have willingly contributed to the gossip of the town.
The Fitzgeralds moved to France in 1924 and joined the expatriate artist community. Here Fitzgerald among others befriended another American writer, Ernest Hemingway.
Fitzgerald and Hemingway referred to themselves as “the lost generation”, feeling a loss of innocence and moral values after the atrocities of the Great War, WW1.
This along with the emerging modernist movement in Europe strongly influenced Fitzgerald and his writing. Fitzgerald wrote his most famous novel, The Great Gatsby, along with other novels and stories in exile.
