The mother is throughout the short story very sympathetic, she speaks to Martin after he’s gone out of the house and they share the same experience of Arthur crying alone.

She seems like she is very sad about her deceased son, but she also seems to know why he died. The mother wasn’t a big protagonist for the father’s high expectations.

She could possibly have known what the consequences of the very high expectations of their son could be.

She almost seemed clarified of her son's death. In the ending of the short story, the mother makes a great deal out of telling Martin that he should be who he wanted to be and not being affected by others wants. This makes it seem like she has learned from her deceased son.

Martin is the main character of the short story. He is the narrator of the story and he is a third person narrator and a Limited omniscient.

Martin met Arthur at school, because he was his Senior Counselor. Arthur was older than Martin and that meant that they didn’t quite know each other that well.
