Indledning
Johan Cullberg, a Swedish professor in psychiatry has described a four-staged model of traumatic crisis in one of his works, thus arranged:

chock, reaction, coping and orientation towards the future. Of course, not one course of crisis is similar to another and the generated reaction to it differs from person to person.

During the reaction-phase a person might respond with defense mechanisms such as escape, whether it’s by repression or actual physical escape.

With the short story ‘’Same Same but Different’’ (2016), author Anne Hayden has done a noteworthy attempt to shed light on the problematics of a crisis.

Uddrag
The cyclical structure has a symbolic way of unveiling the protagonist’s development. By returning to the same starting point (in this case Lukas), the positive change in her psyche is more obvious to the reader.

In the beginning she is absent-minded, not really participating in the conversation and in the end, she is sincere and is able to mention her dead sister, which is a sign of her reconciliation with the past.

Every cloud has a silver lining. It’s important to contemplate that in the end, a crisis also results in valuable life experience and with this in mind, the phrase ‘’same same but different’’

may imply that our protagonist is still the same person, yet different in the sense that she know carries new substantial life experience, which only brings her an advantage when facing possible future conflicts in life.

The story certainly touches on the matter of crisis and the problematics of trying to escape it, instead of dealing with it. It demonstrates very well, how escaping isn’t the same as coping, but a way of reacting.

Of course, this too is an essential part of a crisis, however staying in this phase of reaction can cause serious mental issues later on in life, states Cullberg.

The fact that the protagonist finally opens up about the death of her sister, is a sign of her entering the coping-phase.

Anne Hayden’s story is a compelling portray of a crisis and through intentional use of a cyclical structure and a well-written character she thoroughly sheds light on the importance of coping with a crisis. Additionally

with a little dose of Cullberg-theory the story also succeeds in spreading the message that every crisis brings new valuable life experience as well.
