Indledning
The short story “Not Wanted” is written by Maggie Cobbett.
The story is told in third person narrator through the whole story: “OSMAN FACED the big pile of greasy pans and smiled wryly”.

The protagonist of the Story is Osman. He is a young man living in Turkey with a relative native look: “foreign tourists had removed any false modesty about his dark good looks”.

It also seems like Osman is a very insecure man, especially when he talks to Liz for the first time: “he would be crushed if she turned him down, he could not stop himself asking if he could do anything else for her”.

He is probably also a man who easily falls in love, which is seen in his inner expectation right after they met, and also when he travels to Britain despite all odds...

Uddrag
It’s obvious to everyone that there is big culture difference between Turkey and Britain. This is already seen in Osman’s´ English accent.

He probably doesn’t have a high education, which has resulted in the bad English language.

This is more common in Turkey and the Eastern countries. The English he is familiar with is probably from his work.

His sentences are very simple, but you understand the meaning: “You will write? Invite me to England, yes?”10.

Another moment where the cultural differences are seen is when they are having dinner. The food seems very strange to Liz, and Osman doesn’t know anything about what Leeds is.11

At last, when they are saying goodbye to each other, Osman doesn’t like the way Liz tries to end the short vacation affair. When Osman says, “You will write?

Invite me to England, yes?” 12 Liz actually doesn´t answer his questions, but rather evade the “issue”.

She is raised in a culture where most people would understand this polite rejection, but definitely not Osman.
