Social media can in many ways, be superficial and allow the user only to show the flawless and edited version of themselves.
As presented in the article “Instagram is supposed to be friendly. So why is it making people so miserable?”
published by The Guardian, this misleading image that media portrays, is an issue because of the harm it causes especially young people ”The site encourages its users to present an upbeat, attractive image that others may find at best misleading and at worse harmful”
In result of the misleading image ,the media creates, young people is trying to live up to unrealistic standards, that is impossible to uphold, this can cause many people to feel pressured and stressed, because they so bad want to fit in in the norms that the media creates.
This issue is something that people is aware of, for example the British blogger and influencer Scarlett Dixon had this to say about the media misleading the younger generation “I do agree Instagram can present a false expectation for people to live up to.”.
3 Another important factor that further describes the downside to people posting on social media, is the way that people seek for approval, I order to feel good enough and appreciated by society.
This phenomenon is stated in the essay “My So-Called (Instagram) life” written by Clara Dollar “He likes I got from my followers did little to quell my crushing need for Joe’s cyberapproval.
“Like me again, like me again,” became my subconscious mantra. But he didn’t like me, and each time he didn’t, the heartache felt like a warm bullet exploding in my gut.”
4 This constant need of approval is something the media only contribute to make worse, by effects such as likes, live reactions, and comments.
