Hello and welcome everyone,

My name is Julie and I am also a student here at the Johns Hopkins University. Today, I will give a speech about the American Dream and how it has changed over time. The American Dream is the belief that anyone can achieve success. As a result, the American Dream has turned into a symbol for the endless possibilities offered to everyone, who works hard, are willing to take risks and make sacrifices.

Therefore, it is not important where you are born or what class you were born into. 1 However, the American Dream is not as noticeable as it used to be generations ago. This speech is divided into two parts. Firstly, I will talk about the different perceptions of the American Dream and secondly, I will discuss what it takes to achieve it in today’s America.

I would like to start by telling you about the different perceptions of the American Dream. According to Hearths Insights’ 2017 State of the American Dream report, fewer than one in five in Americans feel like they are living the American Dream, which consists different elements such as owning a house, which is the most important, indicated by the report.

Meanwhile, almost 40% of Americans do not own houses and nearly 50% of millennials rent. Homeownership is rated higher and therefore is a more important element in the American Dream than others such as starting a family and finding a fulfilling career.
