Hello everybody
I’m Sofie Jensen. I’m a student of sociology at the University of Texas and I’m here today because I’ve been asked to give a speech about the importance of giving ex-cons a second chance.

I wanna say thank you for this opportunity, it’s such an honor to speak for the behalf of former prisoners and try to give you an insight on this topic.

Even though I do agree that the jailed people who are violent, for example murders or rapist should be in prison, but when that is said, I do think nonviolent former prisoners deserves a second chance and a lot of the incarcerated are low-levels offenders, who is nonviolent.

The problem with this, is it’s difficult. Every year 600.000 inmates are released from prison and out of those 600.000 individuals, 97 percent will return to a criminal environment - not intentionally, but since they don’t get a fair chance.

Other statistics show that 30 percent of released prisoners that are released from state prisons are rearrested just within the first six months.
