Good evening, welcome to “A second chance”. My name is Maja Delić and I am a student of sociology at the university of Texas.

Thank you very much for having me today, it is a great honor to give this speech at this seminar and I want to thank the Texas Association of Business and Bill Hamond to make this possible.

I want to talk about why incarcerated should have a second chance in the labor market and why it is important for the American businesses and society as well.

The economy, as well as the safety on the streets in the society would also benefit. Jeff an owner of a Sicilian pizza and pasta establishment thinks that everyone deserves a second chance.

He says that ex-offenders want to do better for themselves, their families and therefore are willing to work hard. Jeff gives us an example by showing us one of his best employees who has a criminal record.

Matthew, an employee at Jeff´s business says that if it was not because of the job opportunity he got he would probably still be stealing and doing other stuff that he should not be doing.

A study showed that 97% of offenders in jail today will be released someday and return to the communities from which they came.

Matthew said, “The way the system is set up now, you are set up to failure”. This is because not many people will give ex-offenders a second chance or a job, which is why they do not have a chance to get back in the system.

In the United States there are more than 65 million people with a criminal record. More than 600,000 are released from prison every year.

If the society has such a large unemployment group it is impractical and relatively bad for the economy, costing more than tens of billions of dollars annually.
