Text 1: “Internet addiction even worries Silicon Valley” is an article by Tracy McVeigh and was published in The Guardian in 2012. The first text talks about how social media and big media expossure can be damaging for people.

Most of the views on social media expressed in the article are negative. One of the main points in this text is that the use of the Internet and social media has the potential of becoming addictive “…the notion of the addictive power of digital gadgets is gaining sway” (p. 1, ll. 4-6).

The text discusses how digital relationships might negatively affect real-life connections and relationships, for example “Psychologists are deeply worried about the effects digital relationships are having on real ones.” (p. 2, ll. 68-70).

Text 2: “Teenagers and social networking – it might actually be good for them” is written by Clive Thompson and published in The Guardian, in 2013.

In this text, the author tries to present the readers some positive aspects of social media use and discusses how the use of social media might actually be good for teenagers.

A main point is that using social media helps youngsters develop certain social skills and adapt to numerous circumstances “Indeed, social scientists who study young people have found that their digital use can be inventive and even beneficial.” (p. 4, ll. 63- 65).

Research by Amanda Lenhart of the Pew Research Centre shows how people who text a lot tend to spend more time socialising in the real world, and quotes “One form of socialising doesn’t replace the other. It augments it.” (p. 4, ll. 74-76).
