Indledning
When people hear someone mentioning the word death, it brings up different feelings in us all depending on the experiences we have had with death.

The short story “Wood Grouse on a High promontory overlooking Canada” written by David Guterson in 1996, tells us about two brothers Bud and Gary who are on a hiking trip right close to the Canadian border after the oldest brother Gary has returned from the war in Vietnam.

The story revolves around an accidentally killing on a wood grouse, and how the two brothers have two very different reactions to its death.

“I was young, and I didn’t know any better. So, instead, I asked him about the thing on my mind: “Did you kill anyone in Vietnam?” I Said. (p. 2, ll. 89-91).

Bud has the typical mindset and dreams of 15-year-old boys, who wishes would be in wars, playing with guns and shells. Bud pictured himself as a wild animal hunter when he threw that rock at the bird that fatality made it fall.

Bud is at the age where you’re between childhood and manhood, he wants to grow up and participate in war just like his older brother Gary. Bud is an adventurous boy that seems to have been restless while his brother was in Vietnam.

In the text it’s mentioned that Bud spends a lot of time throwing rocks (p.1 ll 10-13) and he has also managed to get into a fight at school while his brother was away (p. 2, ll 86-87).
