America is known to be as country full of dreams and possibilities regardless of social class, ethnicity and sexuality.

Through American history people have fought for their country and for their rights. They have fought for ‘The American Promise’.

Over the years this promise has been spoken about in many different relations. But what is this ‘Promise’ about and what sacrifices has America made for it?

This is something Obama talked about in his speech on the 28th of august 2008 where he delivered his acceptance speech “The American Promise”

as he was elected as primary for the democratic party. The speech was delivered at the Democratic Convention in Colorado where it was televised.

In the speech and overall Obama is known for having a very remarkable language. He is very formal but yet understandable and he is also very visionary:

“It’s a promise that says each of us has the freedom to make our own lives what we will, but that we also have the obligation to treat each other with dignity and respect” (p. 2, ll. 35-37).

In this passage, Obama is reminding the American people what The Promise stands for and for this he is using anaphora which makes The Promise’s points clearer.

This also gives the speech a little rhythm and makes it more pleasant to read/hear. It also makes the speech more powerful in the way persuades one to believe him and in The Promise. It is also remarkable how the sentences get longer in these lines.

Earlier on in the speech the lines have been existing of middle length and long sentences where in these lines he has created more room for him to express the idea of The American Promise.
