Summary:
The story is about a police officer, of a town in a British colony of Burma, the town is influenced of the British Empire.
He is hated by the whole city, because he is British. One day he gets a call from another police officer from the other end of the city.
The situation is that an elephant is terrorizing a bazaar. He is divided between killing the elephant or not, because a hole crowd of Burmese people who hate him, is standing by him and yelling things in his face.
But deep down inside he knows that it’s wrong to kill the elephant. But he ends up succumbing to the pressure.
Character analysis:
The narrator is unnamed, but we know that he is a British sub - divisional police officer in Burma, who abhors the British imperialism.
He has a negative point of view of the Burmese people, they are bullying him and sometimes they even ridicule him. It’s hard for him to get respect from the locals.
