Indledning
Achieving the American Dream during The Great Depression was no easy task. Especially not when travelling alone.

There were many obstacles to achieving the American Dream; One of them being to accomplish one’s aspiration without help.

This is shown in the novel “Of Mice and Men”, written by John Steinbeck, with George and Lennie as they have to stay together dependent of each other in order to survive, contradicting the American Dream.

This is evident in the way George and Lennie stay together during hard times, much to the confusion of others.

The setting in “Of Mice and Men” consists of a heavily male dominated universe divided into social ranks. We almost only hear about the men in the story.

Other than Curly´s wife there are no significant female characters in the story. This causes some trouble, because men tend to want to show their dominance over others.

We see a great example of that on page 23, line 5 as the boss on the ranch approaches George and Lennie: “On his head was a soiled brown Stetson hat, and he wore high-heeled boots and spurs to prove he was not a laboring man.”

He is the first person they meet at the farm, and from the start they are introduced to the competitive setting at the farm.

We also see an extreme need of respect and dominance from Curly, the boss’s son, as he throughout the story tries to poke to Lennie mentally.
