In Obama’s speech Dear Class of 2020, Obama shows us through her chosen style of language, how she encourages the graduates to speak up and never let anyone tell them what to do:
“So don’t ever, ever let anyone tell you that you’re too angry or that you should keep your mouth shut. There will always be those who want to keep you silent, to have you be seen but not heard.
[…] And if you listen to them, then nothing will ever change.” (p. 2, ll. 71-74). Obama uses a lot of pathos when she appeals to the emotions of enterprise and independence.
She wants young people to be more independent and self-reliant when sharing their visions and ideas about what could be done to better society.
Her use of words in the quote, for example, ‘ever’, ‘always’ and ‘nothing’, is very powerful and strengthens the message and makes it more meaningful.
The speech is also written in spoken language which appears with the use of contractions and everyday vocabulary which is suitable for her audience.
Obama uses anaphora to persuade the audience by appealing to the audience’s feelings, which can make her points stronger and more memorable:
“So, it’s up to you to speak up when you or someone you know isn’t being heard. It’s up to you to speak out against cruelty, dishonesty, bigotry, all of it. It’s up to you to march hand in hand with your allies” (p. 2, ll. 75-77).
