“Compass and Torch” is a short story about an eight-year-old boy, who lives with his mom and her new boyfriend.
The little boy doesn’t get to see his father that often, but he is going to visit him for the first time in 4 months. The boy and his father are going on a hike in the mountains, to spend some quality time together.
However, the mother and her new boyfriend doesn’t seem to like the idea of the little boy going on that trip
it has been a really long time without the boy and dad seeing each other and it makes the mother really concerned about the trip. the father picks up the boy and they drive to the open pale moor.

A father and a mother can never really be replaced, but after a divorce, the children are suddenly split between the two most important people in their lives.
Of course, the parents always want to make it as easy and peaceful for the children as possible, but it’s not always that easy to make it work.
This story is about an eight-year-old boy who lives with his mother and her new boyfriend as a result of his parents separation last year.
The boy doesn’t have a close relationship with his father anymore. He longs for a dad, but his dad has basically not been in his life since the separation. “Compass and Torch” is a short story from 2003 written by Elizabeth Bains.
Bains uses a lot of symbolic values in her story, which is an important factor to really understand the story. The two first symbols in the story are mentioned in the title “Compass and Torch”.
