The United States was founded on six essential values liberty, equality, the pursuit of truth, respect for disagreement, individualism, and tolerance. However, certain events throughout history have made people question how vital American citizens really think these values are.
The United States Declaration of Independence says that all men are created equal. In reality some people in the United States do not always treat all citizens alike, but many Americans feel very strongly about the idea of equality.
There are many cases in American history where not all people were treated equally such as slavery of black citizens. However, Americans like to believe the idea that all people should have equal opportunities. This idea is a part of what is called the “American Dream.” Many early immigrants moved to America to follow the American Dream. They believed that if you worked hard enough, you could move up in society.
Today more and more people recognize that the American Dream is not always reliable. Many people who work very hard do not have very much money.
Often people who come from privileged backgrounds have an easier time becoming successful in this world while people from minorities or other ethnic or racial groups sometimes have a harder time. Still, the idea of equality is an important part of American culture.
Generally, as a country they have ignored many of the values that their nation is based on when it comes to their racial and ethnic past. Freedom is the state of being free to experience the social, political, or economic rights and privileges. Freedom should never be limited by gender, race, or ethnic background.
