Indledning
For hundreds or even thousands of years, people have been discriminated against simply because of their color. Innocent children grow up taught that if they look different, they become less valuable.

For many, racism was devastating for victims and creates monsters from hurt children of white supremacy.

In his short story Mark Mitchell takes the eyes of a firsthand eyewitness to racism in a white lower-middle-class community and reflects on it 2 decades later.

As mentioned at the beginning, the themes are racism and guilt. The topics are usually not expressed directly in the text, as it is up to the reader to interpret them.

First of all, racism is evident through aggressive conversations about black girls, and more importantly, the story takes place in a white-lower middle class.

Guilt can be found in the narrator's reflection. For example, in the phrase “I hoped the knot would disappear. It didn’t. This happened twenty years ago, but I still think about that afternoon almost every day.”

Here, the author uses "a knot heart in my stomach" to symbolize guilt, making the reader aware of the narrator's regret, a feeling that still lingers twenty years later.
