”The lynching of Jube Benson” is a short story in which awhite and supposedly young doctor named Melville tells how he actively took part in the lynching of his black friend, Jube, who was falsely accused of sexual assault and first-degree murder.
When Melville’s fiancé, Annie, was found near-death, beaten and raped —she identifiedher assailant: “That black”— without denoting anyone special.
This open assertion was immediately by her father construed as Jube, as Annie’s father found it conspicuous that the only person absent was Jube.
A manhunt began, and the alleged rapistwas soon captured. Lynched on the spot Jube’s brotherarrived too late with the true perpetrator.
