Indledning
Each of us follows a set of customary practices and procedures in our daily lives, whether it's starting the day by brushing our teeth or picking up our children on the way home. As creatures of habit, these routines provide us with a sense of safety and comfort.

If these were taken away, what would our lives be like? However, some individuals become so consumed by their daily habits that they lose touch with their own existence.

This is exemplified in William Lychack's 2008 short story "Stolpestad," where the protagonist, a police officer named Stolpestad, becomes trapped in a monotonous routine, causing each day to blend into the next.

In this story, the execution of a wounded dog is the main event, which seems like a challenging and unusual task for a police officer to handle. The reader can sense the officer's reluctance to perform this task, and his hope that the boy would come and stop him.

Although he tries to hide the wound from the young boy, he is surprised by the boy's father and his reaction to the situation. As he drives home, he reflects on the sense of déjà vu that he feels, as if he has been through this situation before and will go through it again.

The story's central theme is difficult to determine, but it seems to revolve around the mundane aspects of everyday life. Stolpestad's life is dull and predictable, and this may be the reason he no longer cares about anything and has already experienced everything before.
