It is not easy breaking free of the outside world’s allegations and joining the battle of shutting down the prejudices that comes within the allegations.

White savior complex is referring to a savior no one needs: It’s a term used to describe white people who consider themselves wonderful helpers to black, indigenous and BIPOC (people of color)

but their motivation for and reasons to help are the wrong ones, believing it’s their responsibility to support and uplift communities of color, because people of color lack the resources and willpower to do it themselves.

White saviors consider themselves superior, whether they realize it or not. In this quote from the text, Wainaina refers to conservationists in a way that suggests him believing them to be traders, faking their activism for fame.

By introducing an example of someone familiar to the Western people, here being the conservationists, Wainaina shows who the receiver is.

The sender is addressing an issue coming from countries that might not be aware of it themselves, bringing the attention and root of the issue to these people, making them listen.

The target audience are the ones writing about Africa, hinted in the title ‘How to Write About Africa’ and since the essay was published in a British magazine, the writer must be referring to the British (and Western) writers, who write about Africa as seen through the eyes of a Western individual.
