Hillbilly Elegy. A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis is J.D Vance’s background history, living in a Rust Belt in Ohio steel town. Vance comes from a poor background, with an addicted mother, no money, and few jobs.
He is the very first in his family to graduate, as well as getting a “normal” life with house, wife, and dogs. Even though he was one of those children who faced a grim future.
Vance accomplished something in his life, or that’s what other people mean he has done. Vance is a splendor example of the American Dream.

However, Vance still mentions the factors that prevent the Hillbillys from obtaining the American Dream. An example is the industrial decline and the essential details that fewer jobs are accessible for the poor working-class, much as those who are a part of the middle-class most of the times must have a college education. “
…manufacturing jobs have gone overseas, and middle-class jobs are harder to come by for people without college degrees.” (p. 2, l. 80-81) This is the main reason of why the poor working-class find it hard to achieve success and thus achieve the American Dream.
The intention with this introduction to his book is primarily to get people to read his book. Despite that is the more precise intention to inform people in the poor working-class, that they can obtain upward mobility and great success, even though they come from a poor and nonfunctioning family.
