Uddrag
The Book Hillbilly is J.D. Vance’s own story of growing up in a Rust Belt town in Ohio and against all odds cheating his destiny and achieving a degree in law from Yale.

He tells us about how his grandparents many years ago, moved up north in search of a better life for their family but instead ended up in the lower middle class, like millions of others.

He then reflects on why the Working-class whites are the most pessimistic group in American society, even though many other ethnic groups suffer way worse.

He then gives an example of a young white couple expecting a child, who completely throws away a good job opportunity, because they are lacking agency.

He means the working-class whites have become too good at blaming everyone else but themselves for their sufferings.

Does the idea of The American dream still exist today? The American dream has for centuries been a trademark for capitalist American society and a way for the government to showcase America as “the world of opportunities”.

This has made the USA famous for being a land where all people are equal and have the same chances of becoming successful but is that true?

This essay will focus on how the issues with The American dream are being presented in the book Hillbilly. And afterwards, discuss the possibility for an individual to live out The American Dream.
