The Author presents the reader with various details and aspects of his former life and the community he grew up in.
Vance starts his memoir with a confession, in which he acknowledges how illogical it might seem to write a memoir at the age of thirty-one, and how he hasn't accomplished anything great in his life that would be worthwhile to read about.
By doing so, Vance becomes more credible, trustworthy and amiable in the eyes of the readers. So who are the readers that he is targeting
his memoir is mainly about the aspect of the American dream that he knows, so anyone who is interested in social inequality and the society Americans have built. J. D Vance provides us with a fair amount of key information that could only come from an insider perspective of a white working-class man in America.
Vance has an informal and very personal writing style, which makes the narrative feel like a talk between friends who are quite comfortable with each other.
Vance comes across as relatable and empathetic when he writes about his life and experiences, and he even sometimes uses ironi, which makes him even more appealing to the reader.
