(Summary)

American Psycho is a novel written by Bret Easton Ellis, it was published in 1991. The readers are introduced to antagonist and narrator of the novel, Patrick Bateman, a 27 year old investment banker on Wall Street.

Bateman, who we learn is also a sociopathic serial killer, has an incredbily complex thought process. Bateman takes numerous jabs at popular culture and is definently not one to shy away from letting his opinion on others be well-known.

(Characterisation)

The character of Patrick Bateman is very complex and intricate. He is both the narrator and the protagonist in the text and therefore the readers are given a load of information into his character and how both behaves and thinks “During the nights I’ve been sleeping in twenty minute intervals” (P. 1, l. 1-2).

Almost immediately, the reader learns of Patricks homocidal personality “My homocidal compulsion, which surfaces, disappears, surfaces, leaves again, lies barely dormant” (P. 1, l. 2-4).
