Indledning
”A Simple Exchange of Niceties”, written by Joanne Fedler. This short story is about a pregnant girl who is about to have an abortion. She sits in the park, on a bench, to clear her head, when a lady comes over and sits next to her on the bench.
They small-talk about the baby and the pregnancy, and about whether our main character should smoke or not smoke. They start talking about other things, like, the crying lady can’t have kids. We see how our main character develops through the story.

The narrator is the main character. It’s her point of view, and it’s her story. Her view on herself is not good. We get the feeling that the narrators view on herself is bad
because she calls her self “a trashy whore” – or her ex-boyfriend called her that. She also says, on page 11, line 129, “I’m bad news”. We can see in the text (line 58-59, page. 9), the ex-boyfriend, Damien, calls her “a trashy whore”.
We get the feeling that she thinks that about herself after being called it. She seems distanced to other people, to her mother, her friend Barbie and strangers. You can see in the text (line 69 – 72, p. 9) how she behave against strangers.
She doesn’t want to be disturbed and she doesn’t want any person to interfere, like when she says “Well thanks for your concern”, “not like it’s any of your business”, line 75, page 9.
After meeting the lady on the bench, our main character changes her view. She knows, the lady on the bench, can’t have kids so she decides to give her the baby, if they saw each other again.
The crying lady changed our main character’s view and she opens her eyes about pregnancy and helping other people. Our main character learned that giving makes you happy, that doing thinks for other people makes you happy, and it makes you care.
