Indledning
What could possibly go wrong, being a part-time Indian? Apparently, everything. You might not think it sounds that bad to begin with but imagine being a hydrocephalic. “Junior” was born with way too much cerebral spinal fluid, which in his own words makes him a retard. This makes him stand out, and therefore becomes an easy target for bullies. Junior makes the best of it and stays positive through hard times.

Uddrag
The novel mainly takes part in the Indian reservation, located in Washington. The conditions at the reservation are extraordinary bad, a lot of poverty and a bad social setting. These bad conditions of course contribute to Junior’s harsh life.

There is a great part of the novel, that shows exactly how bad this poverty-situation is looking. “My school and tribe are so poor and sad that we have to study from the same dang books our parents studied from.”

When Junior started his class, he found out he had to use the same book as his mother did, back when she went to school. Which is 30 years ago. It is important to have an insight in Junior’s environment, because it has a huge effect on how he is as a person.

Junior’s real name is “Arnold Spirit Jr.” and he is fourteen years old. He loves to draw cartoons and play basketball when he has the opportunity. He is surprisingly humorous and positive; he does not let the bullies get to him. I think joking about himself, is his way of covering up the “damage”, instead of acting all sad, he just brushes it off.

Arnold is incredibly smart, he was even excited about geometry class. “I was fourteen and it was my first day of school. I was happy about that. And I was most especially excited about my first geometry class.”

He is also brutally honest. He admits all his quirks and he also admit the fact that he masturbates. “Yep, that’s right, I admit that I masturbate.”3 Seizures is another one of his problem, he used to have to seizures a week. Well he has not had one for seven years now but is still susceptible to seizure activity.
