Indledning
Coming to a foreign country as an immigrant can be difficult and challenging, because you have to adjust the new norms and traditions that belongto the new country, which usually are completely unfamiliar with what you’re used to.

You have to choose whether you want to integrate, assimilate, or segregate yourself in the new society. But being born and raised as a second-generation immigrant can leave you feeling torn, and a clash between two different cultures occurs.

This is exactly what the story ‘’Everyone Talked Loudly in Chinatown’’ byAnne Jew, from 1994is about. It’s about a teenage girl’sinternal conflict between two different cultures, the Western lifestyle and her Chineseroots.

Lin is a teenage girl with Chinese background, living in Canada. She is walking home with Todd, the popular boy in school. She is in love with him, but is not allowed to date a Canadian boy, therefore she hides him from her family.

When Lin used to go to Chinatown, she would overhear the shop owners talk about her appearance, and that she didn’t look Chinese: ‘’Look at that high nose, she doesn’t look Chinese’’.

Even though their judgment has not been meant as a bad intention, it might have played a role for Lin, which has caused her to pull further away from the culture.

Lin is dating Todd, a Canadian ‘’white’’ boy. She doesn’t want her parents to know, because she clearly knows that they won’t approve of her having a white boyfriend.

Lin seems to be in love with the feeling of being in love, rather than Todd himself. She notices that she gets a lot of attention at school when being with Todd, and that all the girls envy her, which makes her appear a bit superficial.

It is clearthat they are the opposite of each other. Todd talks a lot, whereas Linn listens. They do not have much in common, but Lin tries hard to stay interested, which indicates that she is somewhat bored and disinterested.
