Indledning
The journey of developing as a person can be a long and difficult road. It might not always be easy, and it might not always be fun, but it is a part of life, and developing is something you will always do. As a human being, you never stop becoming something new.
This subject is spoken about in Michelle Obama’s memoir “Becoming”, and in her interview with Oprah Winfrey.
In order to gain a better understanding of the texts, the following will provide an analysis of the way in which Michelle Obama presents herself, her thoughts on personal development, and Obama’s intention with her memoir.

Obama’s opinion on personal development is that we, as human beings, develop and learn new things all the time, and that we never stop developing. This can be seen in the following quote:
“Oh, a doctor! What a good choice! In those days, I wore pigtails and bossed my older brother around and managed, always and no matter what, to get A’s at school.
I was ambitious, though I didn’t know exactly what I was shooting for. Now I think it’s one of the most useless questions an adult can ask a child
What do you want to be when you grow up? As if growing up is finite. As if at some point you become something and that’s the end.” (ll.5-9).
Especially in the last two lines of the quote, Obama’s opinion on personal development can be seen.
Obama does not think that humans ever stop developing, and neither does she think that humans ever stop becoming something new – hence the title of her memoir.
During Obama’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, she makes a statement that makes it clear for her audience to know what her opinion on personal development is.
Her statement can be seen in the following quote: “There is never a point where you arrive at a thing, and if you do, that is kind of sad. You know, if you think that there is a point in your life when you stop growing and stop learning, that is sort of sad.” (00:50-01:03)
