The Indian market of mobile phones is the second largest in the world due to the big population in India. India has a population on 1.3 billion people which are also the second most populated country in the world.
Though it is a big market, it is also a tough market for Apple due to their small GDP PPP in India. The low GDP PPP is resulting in that apple will not succeed in having many customers in India because they are simply charging too much on the phones.
There are many factors which the Indian population are considering when they are buying a smart phone, such as price, features and especially battery life is very important.
Samsung and Xiamo is the leading companies in the market for mobile phones in India. In India, Xiamo is covering 27% and samsung is overing 22% of the smartphone market, however apple is only covering about 1% of the market.
This is due to the different approach apple has for India. The average price for a smartphone is $200 or less which is almost a quarter of what apple are selling their phone for.
In India there are also a very high duty on the phones which are being sold, so therefore most of the companies are manufacturing their products inside the borders however most of apples products are produced in china and afterwards imported to India where they must pay a high import duty.
Apple has however a cooperation with Wistron where they are manufacturing their lower cost phones iPhone 5SE and 6s and are also planning on manufacture the iPhone X.
Samsung has been manufacturing phones in India since 2007 which also have given them a huge opportunity.
Because of some regulatory issues the companies cannot have their own stores however the phones get sold in other retail stores no matter if it is apple or Samsung.
The type of competition there are in the phone market in India is a mix between differentiated oligopoly and differentiated Partial monopoly.
When a customer is buying a phone there will always be preferences for what features a customer wants to have in a phone and that is why the competition is differentiated.
There is a mix due to that the companies Xiamo and Samsung together are covering 55% of the whole indian market and the rest is multiple different companies, including Vivo which covers 17%
Realme and Oppo which in average are covering 10% of the market each, and apple which only covers 1%
