During a time where racism plays a huge role in the American society, many Americans consider whether America lives up to its more than 244-year-old promise: liberty and justice for all (p. 3, l. 9).

One such man, singer and producer Pharrell Williams, argues that America does not live up to this promise. In his essay, “America’s past and present are racist.

We deserve a black future”, published in 2020 in Time magazine, he states: “we want actual liberty and justice not just for some Americans, but for all.” (p. 4, ll. 18-19).

However, the end of the article lacks the same level of effectiveness in the appeals to ethos. Williams states in order to “make everything good again” it’s now time for a black future, because black American citizens have been oppressed for so long (p. 5 ll. 12-14).

In the start of his essay Williams focuses on liberty and justice for all. This perspective suddenly changes to lack unity and has a narrow focus on the “rightful” rights of the black American citizen. This weakens the strength of his credibility and his argument.

Along with his ethical appeals, Pharrell Williams effectively makes appeals to the reader’s feelings by appealing to pathos. The use of historical facts and the involvement of the American values speaks to the stereotypical proud American.

Once Williams questions the American values which represents liberty and justice for all, he intentionally touches the proud Americans identity.
