– US election 2020: What is the electoral college?
– Joe Biden on Welfare and Poverty

Indledning
The US election is unlike most elections. The person who becomes president is not necessarily the candidate who wins the most votes on Election Day. So even if the one candidate gets the most votes, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the candidate won.

On election day voters cast ballots on Election Day in each individual state. In almost every state, the candidate who gets the most votes win all the electoral votes for that individual state with a given number of electors . Maine and Nebraska are the only states that divide their electoral votes.

Under the electoral college system, each state is assigned a certain number of ‘’votes’’. There is a total of 538 electoral votes , and the number of votes each state receives is proportional to its size - So the bigger the state’s population the more votes it gets.

The formula for determining the number of votes for each state it simple. Each state gets two votes for its two US Senators, and then one more additional vote for each member it has in the House of Representatives.

The candidates have their focus on the swing states with a good number of electors.

A swing state is a state that are jumping between the republicans and the democrats in each election.

Therefore, they set the states that they know they are going to win behind.

Uddrag
This year’s election will not be different than the previous one. Many people think that Biden is certain to win the election against Trump, but those comments were also seen in 2016 when it was Hillary Clinton against Trump.

The outcome of the 2016 election was surprising because Trump won even though Clinton got more votes than him.

This year will look alike the 2016 election. Biden is the favorite in this election after this year’s comments from President Trump.

In May when George Floyd died Trump tweeted out that Black Lives Matter was a symbol of hate. This comment did hurt his reputation even more.

In February Trump told in a speech that the US had Covid-19 all under control, later to find out that the United States of America is the country with the most cases in the world.
