Indledning
The message of the story is that it’s never too late to start over. Marcus can’t get over the fact that his son died. He blames himself all the time because his son died by falling off a balcony.
He can’t change what has happened in the past but he can forgive himself and put it behind him. I think the story has a great message and you can learn a lot from reading it.

Shirley Golden is incorporating the birds in a lot of different ways in the story. This example symbolizes Marcus himself.
The cranes are petrified just like Marcus is, he is not moving forward from what happened with his son, just like a bird that isn’t flying.
The birds and wings the author uses in the story refer to the title. They symbolize flying and freedom because birds fly around where they want to, and when they want to.
