The Great Gatsby | Analyse

Being born in a poor family makes some believe that they can never be like those born in a rich one, they begin to lose faith and have no hope to try having a better life.

All thought there have been some, who never gave up on trying and believed that their background has no influence in their future life.

It is what the term ‘American dream’ is about, that an individual can achieve success in life regardless of social ¬class or family history, only by hard working.

American dream is not just about being able to become rich but about being accepted by the rich people and feel like you are a part of them.

In the novel Gatsby is a ‘new money’, meaning he is not born rich but earned his money, he lives in West Egg which is described as the ‘the less fashionable’ one compare to East Egg. “…

West Egg, the—well, the less fashionable of the two, though this is a most superficial tag to express the bizarre and not a little sinister contrast between them.”

On the other hand, Tom and Daisy live in East Egg, the fashionable one with white palaces and for people with ‘old money’.

“Across the courtesy bay the white palaces of fashionable East Egg glittered along the water” They are the kind of people who has always been rich and grew up in a rich family.
