The Cookies | Essay

Indledning
What is really worth treasuring in your life and what is actually valuable for us? Having a fortune is not surely synonyms with being wealthy. A person can be wealthy in many other ways but that doesn't mean, the person is being aware of how fortunate he or she actually is. Just like the rich and wealthy father in the short story “The Cookies”, who is oblivious of his own son’s values, and doesn’t seem to treasure or acknowledge their relationship enough. The short story presents us the importance of having a normal father-son-relationship, the aftermath of a lack of one and what effect it can have on a child being left all alone. The narrator looks up to him and wants his approval very badly, which is why he is still pick pocketing: “One day Pop will show up again. I’ll hand him the boxful of money (…)” (l. 31). But even though he misses him a lot, he knows very well his father do not care much for him and does not value him one bit: “I just didn’t want to know how much Pop thought I was worth.” (l. 13-14)
The narrator has been experiencing lack of love and nearness from his own father and is still trying hard to try to earn those emotions from him but in no gain. Stealing wallets from strangers was actually the only thing that kind of made him gain some attention from his father so even though his father has abandoned him he still mentally fixed after his search for his father's acceptance by stealing and saving the cash. The narrator's mother in other hand has always been afraid of his son’s habits of pick pocketing and therefore always have tried to prevent him from doing but in no avail.” My ma tried to raise me well. I have to give her credit for trying to make me an honest boy.” (l.15)
