Good evening and welcome to the EU Youth Conference 2014. My name is xx xx.
I am a student at the London School of Economics and Political Science. I am so glad to be here. It is an honour that I got this chance to stand here and in give this speech.
This speech is about a topic that everyone discusses. Your friends, colleagues, parents, especially politicians, because it is a topic that many are concerned about. It is also a topic with numerous opinions and points.
This speech is about immigrants and with the topic “Is Immigration Good for Britain?”
Anyway, a benefit of immigration in society, is that the UK has become a multicultural society. Immigration leads to greater cultural diversity, which gives a country more culturally diverse.
Many countries with immigration have absorbed some aspect of foreign culture into their country for example cuisine, music, literature or political influences.
Of course, the native borns and other immigrants must be cultural relativist, which means that they do not judge others culture against the criteria of another.
But that a person's beliefs, values, and practices should be understood based on that person's own culture. Although it can also be a drawback when immigrants immigrate to the UK. It can lead to a society where there will be a “them and us”, which is a parallel society.
A parallel society can result in racism and disagreements between different religions and cultures. There can be a lot of ethnocentrism and entails the belief that your own culture is superior to those of other groups and is the only right one.
Perhaps if the politicians did not handle immigrate immigrations so badly: whether because they are incompetent, fail to listen or are afraid to be accused of racism.
Then maybe some of the disadvantages would not be here today. That is actually one thing in the UK that unites people with different views about immigration is their conviction of that.
