Good afternoon everyone and thank you so much for coming. It is truly an honor to be here at Leiths School of Food and Wine, and I am thrilled to see so many gathered in this assembly hall today.
To those of you who don’t know already, my name is Dina and I am an entrepreneur from Denmark.
Today, I will be talking about food waste, which is a topic that mean a lot to me. I will start by addressing the ongoing crisis that the UK, among many other counties, is facing.
Currently, retailers account for just over 1% of the estimated annual 15 million tonnes food waste in the UK.
One reason being that supermarkets encourage consumers to buy more than they need with “buy one get one free” offers. Consequently, too much food end up being purchased or prepared .
As a result of the increasing focus on food waste, the leading retailers in the UK have banded together to reduce supermarket food waste by 20,000 tonnes over the past year.
