Hello and thank you for inviting me to your school to talk about the impact food waste has on our world. I will start by introducing myself.
I'm Andrew Hilton. I'm 26 years old and I'm an entrepreneur working on solutions to try and reduce the food waste we see in the world.
Food waste is a big problem in our country but also globally and since you are students at Leiths School of Food and Wine this topic is something that you need to know about.
Most of the waste comes from private households, however it is said that the retailer is in a position where they can reduce the amount of food waste occurring during the supply chain.
A study made by Tesco found that 41% of their food waste occurred in the bakery and then they found a way to reduce that, instead of baking a large bulk of bread they choose to make less but just more often.
3 In 2015 the UK’s leading retailers branded together to reduce the food waste and in 2015 alone they reduced the food waste by 20,000 tonnes. Some of the retailers are Asda, Co-operative Food, Marks and Spencer, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose.
